Wood Wax
I’ve decided to send out a small (1/2 fl oz) tin of my favorite kitchen knife wood finish with each knife sold. I mixed up enough to make some 1 fl oz tins for sale. It’s a mix of bee’s wax, carnauba wax, and food grade mineral oil that is both food safe and stands up to kitchen use.
This is my choice based on two extensive torture tests of suggested wood finishes. One set of tests was done in 2011 – the other in 2014. You can see my notes on the second test of 20 wood finishes here: Kitchen Torture Test Two.
My selection of this wood wax for kitchen knives is based on the beauty and durability of the finish; the ease of obtaining the ingredients; and the completely food safe nature of each of the ingredients.
If you are looking for a wood finish for outdoor knives, and are not concerned about food-safe ingredients, then gunstock finishes such as Tru-oil and Permalyn are also good options.
